撞く数は我々がもつ煩悩の数、108。
一年間の煩悩を払い、清らかな心で新しい年を迎える行事です。

知恩院の大鐘
日本三大梵鐘の１つとして知られている知恩院の大鐘。知恩院第32世 雄誉霊巌上人（在住期間：寛永6年（1629）－18年（1641））が檀信徒に寄進を呼びかけ、寛永13年（1636）に高さ1丈8寸(約3.3ｍ)、直径9尺2寸(約2.8ｍ)、厚さ9寸5分(約30cm)、重さ1万8千貫(約70t)という巨大な鐘を完成させました。この大鐘には「南無阿弥陀佛」の名号と鋳造者の銘を記すのみで、鋳造の来歴や鋳造者の功績を記した銘文は見当たりません。これは、後の論難や災いを避けるための霊巌上人の配慮とされています。
【Ōgane (Large Bell)】With a height of 3.3 meters and a diameter of 2.8 meters, this bell weighs seventy tons. This massive bell was cast in 1636, during the time of Ōyo Reigan, the 32nd chief high priest of Chion-in. Also, the belfry that supports this bell was built in 1678, during the time of Genyo Manmu, the 38th chief high priest of Chion-in. The belfry has a quiet, yet dignified design, which makes it suited to house one of the largest bells in Japan.

ダイナミックな撞き方
親綱を持った撞き手が、「えーい、ひとーつ」という掛け声を発すると、それに呼応して子綱を持つ残りの16人の僧侶が「そーれ！」と、タイミングを合わせて撞木を大きく引きます。その後、撞き手が撞木に仰向けにぶらさがるようにして、体全体を使って大鐘を打ち鳴らします。こうして108打の鐘が年をまたいで撞かれていきます。
大鐘の周りでは、一打大鐘が撞かれるごとに僧侶3人が五体投地の礼拝を行い、数取り役の僧侶が鐘を撞く合図と時間の配分、108打の数取り等々を行います。厳かな雰囲気の中、罪障消滅と世の安穏を祈りながら鐘撞きは進行していきます。
知恩院 除夜の鐘はこのように特殊な撞き方をしますので、ご参詣の方に鐘を撞いていただくことはできません。
The bell is struck 108 times, which represents the number of worldly desires that we hold. Due to its size, it takes a team of seventeen monks to strike the bell, and each time the bell rings the monks can be heard shouting “Ee hitotsu” (One more!) and “sōre”(Now!).
試し撞き
2025年12月27日(土)
14：00～
総本山知恩院の僧侶により、除夜の鐘本番さながらに大鐘の試し撞きが行われます。
- 事前申込は不要です。
- 鐘楼内での密集防止の為、一定人数を超えた場合、入場制限を行います。
注意事項
- 山内には指定文化財建造物が並んでおります。火気の持ち込みは厳しく禁じております。
- 多くの方が参拝されます。特に通行については係員・警備員の指示を守り、事故等が起こらないようご注意ください。
- 境内は一方通行になります。お手洗いは大鐘楼へ入る前に必ずお済ませください。
- 寒い中、長時間お待ちいただくことになります。防寒対策を十分にとってください。
また飲酒行為や、飲酒後の参拝はお控えください。 - 三脚、自撮り棒、ドローン、マイク、拡声器類の使用や、フラッシュ撮影、ライブ配信等、参拝者の通行や撞き手の安全を妨げるような行為は、固くお断りいたします。
- 境内では節度ある行動をもってお静かにお参りいただきますようお願い申し上げます。

- No open flames are allowed in this area due to safety concerns.
- It’s a one way road, so you need to go to restroom before you enter the Daishōrō.
- Please dress warmly. Also, please refrain from drinking alcohol on the premises.
- Please do not use a tripod, selfie stick, camera drones, megaphones, microphone or similar devices.
- Please do not take flash photograph and live stream on SNS.
- We ask that you behave respectfully and quietly within the temple grounds.
